When it comes to dinnertime, we’ve all had that last-minute rush when we realize we have nothing in our pantries to satisfy our hunger.
But delicious, fulfilling dishes can often be the easiest – when you have the right foundation of spices in your cupboard that you can creatively add to a range of dishes.
My pantry is full of many odds and ends, but a well-stocked rack of spices is by far one of the most essential things I rely on during those late afternoons when I’m in a pinch on what to make.
Make your next meal easier on yourself by stocking up on these beautiful spices:
1. Cardamom
Cardamom is a regal, versatile spice that can pair just as exquisitely with savory dishes as it does with lusciously sweet desserts.
Made from the seed pods of plants in the ginger family, they have a camphor-esque quality that can uplift and elevate any dish you put them in.
Whether you’re using cardamom in a warming chai spice blend or using it in a marinade to roast a leg of meat, remember that a little goes a long way.
2. Coriander seeds
When I’m in doubt as to what to add to my dishes, I always find myself reaching for the lemony, mellow flavors of the coriander seed.
The complex, yet stunning flavor profile of this beautiful spice is very different to bold cilantro but pair beautifully in a whole host of dishes.
3.Shichimi Togarashi
Whenever I’m craving a Japanese dish, it’s Shichimi Togarashi that I reach for in my pantry.
This incredible spice blend is amazing on salads, noodles, or fried rice. The rich, zippy flavors have a touch of citrus that is sure to get your mouth watering as soon as you add it into a dish.
4. 5 spice
Forgive me for cheating, but this blend of highly impactful spices is a must-have in any dish in my opinion.
5 spice has an unmistakable depth that comes off in a slight licorice flavor explosion. It’s enough to take any dish to the next level in an instant and my pantry couldn’t be without it.
5. Za’atar
Finally, we have Za’atar. This spice is a blend of toasted sesame, tangy sumac, savory thyme and a range of other earthy spices that give an unexpected edge to any dish.
Giving a Middle Eastern taste sensation, I love adding this to grilled meats and veggies to get the taste buds tingling.
